Error Reporting

AY Gate Server receives the whole message from your mail client, then passes it to the AY Gate Script, which, in turn, passes it to the SMTP server. There could be a temporary or permanent errors at any stage. Regardless of where the error originates, it is going to be reported to your mail client, which will display the error to you.

Errors in communicatons between your mail client and AY Gate Server. These communications happen inside your computer, and such errors are possible only if there is some serious problem in AY Gate installation, for example AY Gate Server is blocked by a firewall. Your mail client will report these kind of errors as an inability to connect to 127.0.0.1 SMTP server.

Errors communicating between AY Gate Server and AY Gate Script. These are either temporary connection errors (e.g. Internet is down, or your Web server is down), or configuration problems (e.g. the script is not installed properly). When reported, these errors are prefixed with phrase Error contacting AY Gate Web script and a colon. Common problems here are:

Error looking up the web server - usually a temporary error. Check that you're connected to the Internet and re-try after few minutes.

Cannot find web server. Most probably you have misspelled the name of your Web server in the URL of the script.

404 Not Found. Most probably you have specified an incorrect path or name of script file in the URL of the script.

Not an AY Gate script. The URL that you have entered doesn't point to the AY Gate script.

Web server sends the script file instead of executing script. You put the file onto your Web server, but the server is configured not to run scripts from the directory where you put it. Contact your Web hosting company for the directions on where and how to install CGI scripts.

405 Method Not Allowed. On Windows, this means that the server doesn't want to treat the file as a script. Make sure that the script name has the extension exe. Also, make sure that the Web server has permissions to run scripts (including Executables) from the folder where the script is installed. Contact your Web hosting company for the directions on where and how to install CGI executables.

500 Internal Server Error. On Linux, this usually means that file permissions are not set correctly for the script file, and web server cannot execute the script. Suggested permissions are 0755.

Errors communicating between AY Gate Script and SMTP server. If you send direct AY Gate Script will be communicating with different SMTP servers (depending on the destination email address), so these errors may be very common. If you use a designated SMTP server, such errors shouldn't happen unless you specified a wrong server name and characteristics. When reported, these errors are prefixed with AY Gate and a colon.

Errors reported by the SMTP server are reported directly, as if your mail client was communicating with the SMTP server directly without AY Gate in between.
